The challenges of classification in cross-border e-commerce

    📦

    Catalogues with thousands of SKUs

Tens of thousands of references, with vague marketing descriptions and no material composition or stated use. Classifying them by hand simply does not scale.

    🛑

    Customs holds on export

A missing or wrong HS code in your Amazon product feed or customs declaration can hold up thousands of shipments and cause costly delays for your customers.

    🌍

Every country = its own nomenclature

Selling in the EU, the US and the UK at the same time means managing 3 different nomenclatures for every product. Without automation, transposition errors are inevitable.

    🔄

    New collections all the time

In e-commerce, the catalogue changes every week. Each new reference must be classified before it goes live, so that the first international orders are not held up.

    Facts, not marketing

The engine relies on the description and the declared attributes (material, construction, use). The mandatory reference is the item's key; neither it nor the trade name determines the code. When a fact is missing, you get a precise question.

    NEVER A GUESSED CODE
    📷

The photo, for what can be seen

The photo answers closed questions about visible properties. It never establishes the material, the weight or the use.

    Five markets in one operation

EU, United Kingdom, United States, Norway, Canada: the HS6 is established once, then each country gets its own subdivisions, such as the unit value that changes the code of a bag in the United States.

    Bulk import

Your whole catalogue, classified in one batch

A product sold abroad without a reliable HS code is a risk with every shipment. Import your catalogue from your store or a file, and run the classification when you decide: syncing never classifies anything without you.

In a batch, the mandatory reference is the key of each item. Identical questions can be grouped: you answer once for all the lines concerned.

🔑 Mandatory reference — A line without a reference is rejected before classification; repeated references are flagged.

    Checks and consistency

Consistent codes from one item and one country to the next

Before launch, a free check spots problems in the file. After classification, the consistency audit flags identical items that received different codes, and the “HS codes that differ by country” page lists the references whose HS6 changes from one country to another. Nothing is corrected automatically: you decide.

ℹ️ Justification — Every final code comes with a PDF that quotes the applied texts word for word.

    Multi-market

One catalogue, five markets, every national criterion

Selling online in Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway and Canada means five nomenclatures. The HS6 is established once, then each country applies its own criteria. In the United States, the subheading of a leather bag depends on its unit value: if it is not declared, the engine asks you for it.

🌍 Same HS6, own subdivisions — If the same reference ends up with different HS6 codes depending on the country, it is flagged. National subdivisions, on the other hand, are specific to each country.

US specific: the HTS separates leather bags valued at $20 or less (4202.21.60.00) from those valued over $20 (4202.21.90.00). Without a declared value, you are asked a question instead of getting a guessed code.

    Use case

From your store to the justified code, country by country

Illustrative example of a catalogue classified for the chosen markets.

Here is how an international launch works with CrossbordIA:

    01

    Catalogue import

From the store or an Excel or CSV file. You map the useful columns: reference, description, material, photo.

    02

    Classification for your markets

The EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway or Canada: each product is classified for the countries you choose. The photo only answers closed questions about visible properties.

    Processing runs in the background

    03

    Grouped questions

Products with too little description get a precise question; identical questions are grouped so you answer once. The others get their code and supporting document.

    04

    Export by country

Results are exported by jurisdiction; sending them back to stores will come with their direct connection.
