Fashion & Textiles · Chapters 50–63

Customs classification that speaks your textile language

Composition, knitted or woven, gender, type of garment: CrossbordIA applies the notes to section XI and chapters 61 and 62 to each reference, for the EU, the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway and Canada. When a fact is missing, you get a precise question, not a guessed code.

    Reasoning

    ① Woven, not knitted → chapter 62

    ② Women's dress → heading 6204

③ Dresses → 6204.4; neither wool, cotton, synthetic nor artificial predominates → 6204.49

    ④ Silk predominates (78%) → “of silk”: 6204.49.10

The challenges of classification in fashion & textiles

    🧶

    The material that prevails

78% silk, 20% polyester, 2% elastane: the material that predominates by weight sets the subheading. Without a reliable composition, the code is a guess.

    👕

Knitted or woven, men's or women's

The same shirt changes chapter depending on whether it is knitted (61) or woven (62), and heading depending on gender, which is set by the side of the fastening under note 9 to chapters 61 and 62.

    🌍

Thresholds that change from one country to another

In the EU, a dress is “of silk” as soon as silk predominates; in the United States, it takes at least 70% silk by weight. Each market has its own subdivisions.

    📸

    Product sheets written to sell

“Flowing”, “soft”, “premium” say nothing about the material or the construction. The material must be declared: the photo never establishes it.

Each feature has been calibrated on the specifics of chapters 50 to 63 — textile materials, garments, knitwear, accessories.

    🧬

    Predominant material, from your composition

Enter “78% silk, 20% polyester, 2% elastane”: the “of silk” subheading is chosen because silk predominates by weight. With equal shares, no material prevails and the engine does not decide for you.

    SECTION XI · NOTE 2
    🧥

    Gender note applied

Men's or women's? Note 9 to chapters 61 and 62 decides: left over right = men, right over left = women. The photo answers a single closed question: on which side of the wearer the buttons are. If the gender cannot be determined, the text classifies the product with women's garments.

    NOTE 9 · CH. 61-62
    👗

    Knitted or woven, without assumptions

The boundary between chapter 61 (knitted or crocheted) and chapter 62 (woven garments) depends on the construction. If it is declared and the photo contradicts it, the engine stops and asks you the question; if it is missing, it asks you for it.

“The dresses in the SS25 collection are woven”: keep this fact for similar products and the question does not come back. An instruction records a fact, never a code, and declared data always prevails.

    PERMANENT INSTRUCTIONS

    Compositions & materials

The predominant material, read from your composition

In chapters 50 to 63, the subheading often depends on a single question: which material weighs the most? CrossbordIA reads it from the composition you declare, even for a blend of 4 or 5 fibres, and chooses the subheading that names this material. Note 2 to section XI is cited in the justification.

The photo never plays a part in this calculation: it sees neither percentages nor weight. Without a composition, or with equal shares, the engine does not guess.

⚠️ Missing composition — No composition, no assumption: the free file check flags empty compositions before launch, and the engine asks the question if the material is needed.

The photo, for what can be seen

The photo answers closed questions, nothing more

Side of the fastening, visible knit, product matching the description: the photo answers closed questions about visible properties. It never establishes the material, the weight or the use, and a photo that does not show the described product is discarded.

💡 Declaration and photo disagree? The engine stops and asks you the question. Nothing is decided silently.
